Reading style · Strict order

Read strictly in this order — the books connect directly.

Editor's note: The main books must be read in order, each one picks up right where the last one ends (and brace yourselves, because the endings are brutal). Threshing Day is a collection of thirteen stories about the day different characters bond with their dragons, and we recommend reading it after Onyx Storm to avoid spoilers. The series will have five main books, Rebecca Yarros is writing the fourth one and it still has no title or release date.

💕 Violet Sorrengail & Xaden Riorson

Twenty-year-old Violet Sorrengail was supposed to spend her life among books in the Scribe Quadrant, but her mother, the commanding general, orders her into the Riders Quadrant at Basgiath War College. Smaller and more fragile than everyone else, and with fewer dragons willing to bond than cadets, plenty of people want her dead, starting with Xaden Riorson, the most powerful and ruthless wingleader in the quadrant. As she fights to survive each day, Violet begins to suspect Navarre's leaders are hiding a terrible secret.

⚠ Content warnings

Graphic violence and frequent character deaths, constant threat of death, physical pain and chronic illness, difficult mother-daughter relationship, grief over a father's death, explicit sexual content.

Everyone expected Violet to die during her first year at Basgiath, but Threshing was only the first of many impossible tests. Now the real training begins, designed to push riders to the limit of their pain, and the new vice commandant is determined to prove how weak Violet is, unless she betrays the man she loves. With the secret hidden behind the college walls in her hands, the will to survive won't be enough this year.

💕 Several characters from the series, including Xaden Riorson

A collection of thirteen stories starring fan-favorite characters and their dragons, all centered on Threshing, the day Basgiath's cadets head out to find the dragon they'll be bonded to for life. It includes Xaden's point of view and sixteen original illustrations by Joe Requeza. It's not book four, it's a companion to take us back to Basgiath while we wait.
