★★★★☆Synopsis
Lennon Wells and Beckham Sullivan seemed made for each other. Both vulnerable, both trying to please difficult families and both scarred by the past. Going from friends to lovers felt inevitable, and so did the bad ending. After that, they both thought, and hoped, they'd never see each other again.
Years later, whether through bad luck or fate, Lennon and Beckham end up working at the same magazine. The wounds are still open, but the chemistry is still there, untouched. When they're forced to work together on a project, one impulsive night is all it takes to change everything. One single mistake. And Lennon finds out she's pregnant.
Now that they have more in common than ever, Lennon and Beckham are going to be part of each other's lives for a long time, whether they like it or not. And little by little, they're starting to like it. If only they could break free from the family traumas holding them back and give themselves something they never expected, a second chance.
The protagonists
LENNON
THE NEW GIRL AT THE MAGAZINE
She just landed her dream job at a magazine, and the last thing she expected was to run into her first love there. Feisty and quick with a comeback, she carries the weight of a difficult family and a deep need to do things her own way.
BECKHAM
THE GRUMPY COWORKER
Lennon's first love, who vanished from her life without a word. Now he's her coworker, cold and curt, but behind that armor is someone shaped by his own family, with far more heart than he lets anyone see.
My review
Friends, this book was a total surprise. I went in with zero expectations, barely knowing anything about the story, and ended up loving it 🤭💕 It's one of those books you pick up out of curiosity, and suddenly it's 1 a.m. and you're still glued to the pages.
Lennon finally lands her dream job, but on her very first day she comes face to face with Beckham, her first love, the guy who disappeared from her life right after her first time. And the Beckham standing in front of her is no longer the sweet boy she remembers, but a cold, grumpy man who wants nothing to do with her. Until their boss sends them to Chicago together to sort out a work issue, and after a couple of drinks, all that chemistry that never really went away explodes all over again... with one pretty little consequence 🤰🏻
As you know, I'm a huge fan of grumpy heroes, and Beckham is a charming grouch. Grumpy, curt and proud on the outside, but the kind who shows he cares through tiny little gestures, and when he starts taking care of Lennon during her pregnancy, I swear you'll melt. Lennon holds her own too, she's feisty and doesn't let him get away with anything, and that push and pull between them is exactly what makes this book work so well.
I laughed out loud several times 😅😆, their banter is so good, and there are some really awww moments 🥹 that leave your heart all warm. Behind the humor there's something deeper too, because they both come from complicated families, and watching each of them break free from that so they can choose each other gives the story a really beautiful heart. Plus, the pet name he has for her is way too sweet, you'll find out.
It has steamy scenes, second chance, a surprise pregnancy and a happy ending that leaves you smiling. Totally recommended ♥️
Content warnings: death of a parent, difficult family dynamics and generational trauma, unplanned pregnancy.
